The British tennis star earned the most important victory of his professional journey by rebounding from a early deficit to overcome top-ranked player Carlos Alcaraz 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the early stage of the Paris Masters.

While he had before beaten Alcaraz on two occasions, this triumph marks Norrie's maiden win over a sitting world top-ranked player.

"Huge. So big for me," said Norrie, who is now the latest English competitor in the record books to beat a world No 1. "Bouncing back from a physical setback last year, I was defeated in the first round of qualifiers here. I just aimed to embrace my tennis in the second half of the year. To secure a win like this, it's the biggest victory of my tennis journey, my initial victory over the global number one and likely the most in-form competitor in the world right now."

Norrie, ranked 31st in the world, also halted Alcaraz's dominant run of nine straight final appearances and 17 successive Masters 1000 successes, which marked the finest stretch of outcomes in the Spanish star's developing career.

The top seed appeared to be progressing easily to a win in the beginning as he sailed in the first set. Yet, Norrie gradually battled back into contention by executing with improved accuracy and dragging the Spanish opponent into extended, physical exchanges. His persistent shot tolerance and consistency slowly took its toll.

During large parts of the contest, the world number one performed well on serve but he struggled badly to find his timing with his rally strokes. The 22-year-old looked particularly uneasy hitting his forehand, which has been the best shot in the world for a large part of this season, haemorrhaging 29 mistakes off the forehand side and a total of 54 mistakes. Opposing him, Norrie offered Alcaraz so few mistakes, maintaining his reliability, physicality and penetration throughout while performing well on serve and choosing his moments to advance inside the baseline and play aggressively.
